About the Photo Club

Who We Are and What We Do

The Bainbridge Island Photo Club (BIPC) was organized as a non-profit in 1999 on Bainbridge Island, WA, in the Seattle area. A few people wanted a place where they could share what they know and don't know about photography, and thereby improve their skills and enjoyment. They were right. Those who have been around since the early days can testify to how much the quality of the Club's photography has improved over the years.

The Club now numbers about 50 members, most of whom are now doing digital photography. Our monthly general meetings are held at the Bainbridge Commons, 370 Brien Drive, Bainbridge Island, WA, 7:00 to 9:00 PM on the days specified on our calendar. Dates and further details of Club meetings are also to be found there.

On odd- numbered months (January, March, etc.) the meetings are competition sessions where members bring in images they'd like to display and have judged in the context of other members' efforts. The meetings on even numbered months present an educational theme of one kind or another, often led by outsiders who bring new blood and fresh ideas to the scene. Club activities also include special interest groups and occasional field trips to nearby locations such as the Columbia River Gorge or Seattle's Japanese Garden.

If you want more concrete evidence about what the Club actually does, check out our calendar and our past year's newsletters.

Finally, by joining the Club, you also become a member of the Photographic Society of America (PSA) and the Northwest Council of Camera Clubs (NWCCC).

How to Become a Member

Membership is open to all adults and young adults interested in photography. Annual dues are $30 for individuals or $45 for a family for the whole year 2009, with the monthly newsletters by e-mail. If you join after September your dues cover the entire next year too. For more info on membership, e-mail the webmaster. Or just print this membership application and mail it with your check. The mailing address is on the application.

Digital Imaging Study Group

A special interest group of long-standing is the Digital Imaging Study Group (fondly known as DISG). This group of 10-15 members meet monthly during the day (again, the calendar) to advance their skills in digital imaging generally, with a strong bent toward increasing Photoshop skills. Each meeting includes an "open mike" session where all members ask and tell, then a "lesson", a presentation by one member of the group on a subject like sharpening images in Photoshop, or the use of layer masks -- moderately advanced. The group's meeting schedule can be found on the calendar. Meetings are generally held at the BI Fire Station on Madison Ave N. For further info, contact Hal Muhrlein, the group facilitator.
